Ambrose and his book

Was the Lewis and Clark expedition significant and important enough to have put up with such a big risk as they did?  Many people have different opinions on this particular question.  If you were to ask Stephen E. Ambrose (author of the book Undaunted Courage) he would say that he thinks that it was a good idea.  He has compared the significance and compact of the expedition to that of the moon landing.  He has been quoted as saying about the importance that "For the first time, white men had a map, however imperfect and imprecise, to connect the great rivers of the western rivers of the western empire."  Other historians, whose names I was not able to get, also believed it had great significance because, first of all, it strengthened the United States' position in the struggle for control of North America, and because they discovered the true course of the Upper Missouri and its major tributes.

I also believe that it had much significance in that they made many great discoveries that helped to shape America.  However, it would seem that some of their accomplishments were done in vain.  One of the reasons I say this is that they worked very hard to herd many buffalo, which are now near extinction.  Also, they carefully mapped out rivers, lakes, etc., all of which have changed since their time.  Lastly, atleast that I will talk about, they studied Native American culture which we have interrupted by putting the Indians on to reservations.
