William Clark |
After their long journey of a few years, and many new discoveries,
the men finally returned from their trip on September 23, 1806. They had many new friend for the United States of America,
and Jefferson was very pleased with all of their major (and even a few minor) accomplishments. Unfortunately though, they
came back just in time to witness the beginning of what would eventually lead to the War of 1812, but that's a completely
different story. So you now know about the key details of Lewis, Clark, their men, and the large expedition they
had going cross country and back. The entire time they were studying plants, animals, the Native Americans, and anything
else of interest. Also, in 1807 Meriwether Lewis was appointed governor of the Louisiana Territory, while William Clark
was appointed governor of the Missouri Territory during the year of 1813. Lewis eventually died on October 11, 1809,
from gunshot wounds caused either by suicide or theives. Clark died in St. Louis quite a bit later on September 1, 1838.
His funeral was said to have been the most impressive that ever took place in that city.
